Help.

Help me. I am so frustrated. I am going backwards and it is driving me nuts.

These are not great but I have always wanted to do something in a field of wildflowers. The sun was setting and Sophia was clean. I am not a fan of her being in the pettiskirt but we were on our way back from a party and they requested she wear it. They weren't really planned and were rushed but still they should have been better.

Just look over these and give me some feedback. What would you have done differently.

I tried to process them but they just seem blah to me.

I like this one the most. It has less haze and seems more natural.

The sky totally blew. I tried to fix it but I couldn't.

I cropped it hoping that would help but....

This one is okay...a little too much haze right?

I swear one minute I feel like I could hang my sign and learn and the next minute I want to throw it away.

I think my camera is acting up. When we were in Indy My Aperture mode kept totally blowing out the pictures. I thought it was because of Sam's lens but it is doing it all the time now. I try to use Manual but I like aperture for action shots.

  1. This is like the blind leading the blind here :-) I've been having some of the same issues too. I even went to the camera store yesterday crying "HELP!!" Pathetic, I know.

Anyway...your photos...I feel you had all the elements for a great shoot. Great location, great lighting, great outfit and super cute model! I really didn't feel the photos were bad. They were crisp and in focus. The haze is inevitable in the evening sun, esp when shooting into it. I say keep playing around with the sun, trying different angles, until you find your sweet spot with the perfect amount of haze. Its a learning process. Still learning myself!

The only thing I would change if I were doing these photos (and take this for what its worth) is the composition. Most of the photos (except your favorite) is pretty much dead center in the photo. Try using the rule of thirds next time you're out or when you crop. It really does add interest to most pictures just by having the subject off-centered. For example, the thrid picture, I would have cropped it with Sophia at the very bottom and then extend the sky upwards (see next post). This just may be *my* style so if you don't like it...just ignore it..ha! I would also encourage you to try different angles. Some work and some don't but trial and error is the best teacher. I once saw Bobbi& Mike standing on a ladder to get their shots. Like me, you probably don't carry a ladder in the back of you car, but you should plan a reshoot in that field, take a ladder, and see what happens. I think having Sophia sitting or laying in the field and you shooting down on her could be really really great.

I wish I had better feedback for you. I think I'm in a slump with you. Hopefully we can BOTH get out of this funk we're in so we can start our business! Good luck...and honestly, you probably think your photos are much worse than they actually are. I'd be proud of these if I were you :-)

  2. I totally see what you are saying. I am actually a fan of off center photos but for some reason I find most of my pictures dead center lately. I kind of feel like I've lost what I had and am just going through the motions.

These poses were very lame and quick...my in-laws started shouting at me about chiggers and stuff while I was doing these so they were very very quick. I think what really bothered me was I had always envisioned getting to do this and it was totally off.

    Thanks for helping!

  3. The problem wasn't your photography...it was you being rushed!! Try the shoot again WITHOUT your in-laws in tow :-) I'm positive we can blame everything on them!

I love the wildflower field...its amazing!! I think you could rock out (am I too old to say that?!) a photoshoot there.

  4. Hannah, the pictures are great. I am a novice compared to both you and Melinda, but I find time of day is my worst enemy when shooting on A mode. The setting and outfit were great...it sounds like you had a "busy" schedule that day too! Can't wait to visit again. Melinda, Love your photograpy site, Beautiful:)
